On Monday, Feb. 7, at about 10:30 a.m., two people from Chicopee were in a 2002 Suzuki Vitara on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County, Virginia, when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, going north, and hit an embankment, according to the Daily News-Record.

The car flipped over and came to a stop.

Then a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe struck the Suzuki, which overturned again and both vehicles landed in the median.

The driver, a 27-year-old Chicopee woman, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment to life-threatening injuries.

Her passenger, Nickolas W. Mayo, 29, of Chicopee, was also transported to the hospital. Mayo, who was wearing a seat belt, died from the injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 63-year-old man from Virginia, sustained “serious injuries” and was also transported to the hospital for treatment, as were his passengers a 19-year-old woman and a 9-year-old boy.

The crash is under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
